KAS Presents the Inaugural Season of “Remote Viewing Sessions”

Sharing the night sky with the public through outdoor observing sessions from April through October at the Kalamazoo Nature Center has been a long-standing tradition for the KAS. We are pleased to announce that beginning on November 16th we will be introducing indoor “Remote Viewing Sessions” that will run through February of 2020. The monthly sessions will be held in room 1110 of Rood Hall located at 2101 Wilbur Ave. on the WMU campus. Please see the table below for start times. Admission is free.

If weather conditions necessitate a cancellation there will be a second “cloud date” scheduled the following Saturday. Postponement or cancellation information will be posted on the KAS website and social media accounts.

The new winter Remote Viewing Sessions are being made possible because the KAS is bringing online its new Remote Telescope array located under the dark desert skies of Arizona Sky Village in Portal, AZ. The telescope array consists of a 4-inch Takahashi telescope mounted on a 20-inch PlaneWave telescope, both equipped with identical full-frame CCD cameras. Remote Viewing Session attendees will view images of constellations and deep-sky objects captured on the CCD cameras in Arizona, transmitted to Kalamazoo via the internet and projected on the lecture hall screen. A large flat screen TV will also provide live streaming video of the telescope in operation.

Dates for the 2019/2020 season are as follows:

Primary Date Cloud Date Time
November 16th November 23rd 8 – 10 pm
December 14th December 21st 8 – 10 pm
January 18th January 25th 9 – 11 pm
February 15th February 22nd 9 – 11 pm

For more details and to view images of the telescope array, please visit the Kalamazoo Astronomical Society’s website at www.kasonline.org. You can also follow the KAS on Twitter and Facebook.
